What to bring to your photography workshop
Optimal equipment list
You!
- A positive attitude
- Tremendous curiosity
- Sensitivity to your subject, and one another
- Your love of photography
Equipment for in the field
- Good quality sturdy tripod with good quality tripod head
- Digital SLR or high quality mirrorless camera
- Batteries (at least three) and charger. A 12 volt charger for your car can be a huge bonus, and is essential for camping workshops.
- Data cards (at least three)
- Camera instruction book
- Lenses (a wide assortment). Focal lengths from 24-400 cover nearly all of my photographic needs. A wider lens (17-24mm) and a macro if you have them can be wonderful.
- Lens shades
- High quality UV or Skylight filter for each lens
- Polarizing filter(s) for all lenses
- Camel hair brush and lens cleaning tissue and fluid
- Cable release
- Rain sleeve/poncho for your camera
Clothing and protection
- High quality hiking shoes and good warm socks
- Sandals if appropriate to environment
- For warm climates, cool clothing, hat to protect from sun, sun block
- For cold climates, warm clothing (in layers!) that will keep you comfortable outside in the cold wind for hours, and gloves you can operate a camera with. Don’t forget a wool hat, which I forgot to pack on my first trip to Iceland.
- Rain jacket
- Sunglasses with neck strap
Your digital darkroom for reviewing images
- Laptop computer (Windows or Mac)
- Software installed on computer
- Capture One software, and/or Lightroom
- Photoshop if possible (As of this writing, you can get Lightroom Classic and Photoshop CC as a package for $19.99 per month). Don’t plan on using Lightroom CC. It’s a bare bones program. Lightroom Classic is far superior.
- High speed media reader (USB 3.0 or 3.1 or equivalent) if not built into laptop (test this before leaving home)
Miscellaneous
- Water bottle
- Food for snacking
- Toilet paper just in case
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
