Destination Workshops Overview

Come with me, to some of the most beautiful, most photogenic places on earth. Enjoy creating images unlike anything you may have done before, as you further develop your eye.

Each workshop is open to a full range of photographers, from beginners to accomplished experts. I’ve designed the workshops to be accessible from wherever you are in your development process as a photographer.

I also offer webinars to teach essential skills. If you’re fairly new into photography, if you don’t have a strong technical understanding, or if you just have some gaps you need to fill in your understanding, I recommend attending some of my webinars before participating in one of the destination workshops.

Destination workshop days have three essential parts:

  1. You, your mental state, what you’re bringing, your relationships to the place and subject
  2. Image capture
  3. Show and tell — Image evaluation, learning from each other

Mental aspects

  • Being ready. The right equipment, the best light, an open attitude.
  • Feeling your enthusiasm, your emotional connection to the subject: your guide to composition.
  • Composition and previsioning. Imagine what the completed image will look like.
  • Not just taking snapshots. You’re creating art. Work like an artist.
  • Be spacious with yourself, taking your time with the camera, ensuring all settings are right, and that you captured the image.
  • Review and repeat!

Image Capture

I will work with you to help you capture an excellent quality image of the subject you are working with. Using the display on your camera, we will evaluate in real time what you can do to improve your image. Both composition and mechanics will be included.

Topics typically include:

  • Camera position is everything! Choose your position, then the lens
  • Using a tripod
  • Crop the image in the field, not in the computer, to preserve resolution
  • Use the mirror lock feature to prevent camera shake
  • Use a polarizing filter when it will help
  • Bracket position, and exposure if you need to
  • Bracket aperture
  • Check the histogram
  • Always capture RAW
  • Culling in the field, saving sorting and culling time later

Image Reviews

Show and tell — Image evaluation, learning from one another and from me

  • This is a significant part of the program. Honest feedback, both what we like, and what we think could be better, can help all of us see more clearly and make better images.

Thank you for your interest in attending one of my destination workshops. These adventures can be a tremendous amount of fun, and, they require some preparation. Please review each of the following pages to ensure you’re well prepared.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS AND WEBINARS WITH JASON WESTON

DEATH VALLEY WORKSHOP – OCTOBER 13-17, 2019

Death Valley is a jewel, a land of shifting sands and deep stability. Depending on time of year it can be unbearably hot, or miserably cold. We're aiming for that sweet spot in between when it's comfortable to be there.  This workshop is currently under construction. I’ll have a detailed itinerary and pricing soon. If you think you want to participate, please contact me.
